When I purchased my home on Juneteenth 2020 I had no idea that it would become a TV show on HBO MAX co-produced by HGTV and the Oprah Winfrey Network.

But what I did know is that the home’s mission was bigger than me.

Buying my home was the easy part.  Staying the course the past 4 years to get it over the finish line – that was the biggest test of my life so far.

There were so many times where people around me said that it wasn’t going to get completed or that there was no way I was going to raise the capital to get over yet another construction delay.  

But I kept going.  

I kept going because I knew that if I didn’t stop you wouldn’t either.  

A few weeks before construction ended and the film crews arrived to capture the sheer beauty of what we had created, I was walking around the house and I saw you there.  

I saw you on my couch talking about your company.  I saw you in my studio upstairs working out the intricacies of your story.  I saw you at my dining table toasting to a bigger vision of your life.

I saw you there.

About Hartwell House

In 1782, one year after slavery had been outlawed in Massachusetts, Benjamin June, a skilled weaver, purchased the land where my house now stands.  At the time there were only two homes on the street. These homes belonged to Mr. June and Reverend Samuel Hopkins, the father in law to Mr. Sibley’s brother Dr. John Sibley, an army surgeon.  

In 1789, Mr. June sold the home to Stephen Sibley, a clockmaker and acting Justice of the Peace in Great Barrington.  

In 1810, Dr. David Leavenworth purchased the home from Stephen Sibley.  Dr. David Leavenworth came to Great Barrington in 1805 from Waterbury, Connecticut.  For 25 years, he was one of the principal active businessmen of Great Barrington.  From 1812-14, he represented Great Barrington in the General Court and from 1812-1830 was one of the principal officiating magistrates. 

Dr. Leavenworth demolished the property at my residence and built what stands there today in 1822.  It was “then considered the finest building in the village”.

200 years later, it has been christened Hartwell House by a young Black entrepreneur with a dream to discover the home’s history, uncover its secrets, fill it with love, give it new life, and make his ancestors proud.,,

Robert Hartwell is an award-winning Broadway performer, choreographer, director, producer, and CEO of Strength On Stages in NYC. He is the host and executive producer of Taking Back the House, a television show presented by OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network, HGTV, and Scott Brothers Entertainment premiering in Spring 2024.

You might know Robert from his viral social media post. As a Black gay man, he vowed to fill this home with love, honor his ancestors, tell their stories, and say their names.

Robert founded The Broadway Collective which made the Inc 5000 List for its rapid growth: 440% revenue increase in 3 years. He’s an intuitive entrepreneur who understands how to bring out the greatness inside each client.

As a director and choreographer his work has been seen at Lincoln Center in NYC, the Kennedy Center in DC, and numerous theaters across the country.
